This is, ofcourse, a reason as valid as any other.
http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1726386,00.html
My ABCD friend in medical school ( so I am guessing they are well off enough) said her parents never owned a new car ever. All money was saved for and spent on education/ violin class.
with the value of rupee going up( ok..we still have some catching up to do) and the dollar going down( thanks to all the oil nations), it makes more sense to raise a family in india.
by the time all this comes to india- our kids would have to worry about that!
atleast I can ask my parents/in-laws to look after my kids….save on day care!
whew…

I am tormented by this photo. what do I think about when I see it- the thick blood flowing from his forehead? how it doesnt look like in movies at all? the determination in his eyes? the blood he has spread around his face? the gruesome calmness in the picture?
disturbing as hell…. now there are only worlds…heaven and earth.

A back to back post on books!
Blind assassin by margaret atwood was like a piece of music …literally, the words just flowed. The style was different- she explains things so beautifully, you are lost in the words more than the plot.
I liked the book-within the -book kinda plot… things unravel slowly, with tiny knots of digression ( anything for more music by atwood!)
reading about dysfunctional families is not new…( one more fact against marriage!) but somehow atwood’s words form these images in your mind that refuse to be erased.
The other thing I noticed was the constant reference to death ( ominously) that seemed to be popping up all the time.
The story of the actual “boys who became blind and girls who died for the gods” was really interesting…morbidity is also interesting at times!
on the whole, totally worthy of the booker prize!(2000)
My friend gave me a famous book to read- The Chosen by Chaim Potok. As rightly guessed, (from the author’s name), it is a story of two jewish boys and their fathers in NY, during the world wars.
The book was excellent.. maybe I should read it again..to get the second layer meaning…hmmm…dunno.
I liked that the book explained Jewish traditions, weaving into it societal pressures and raising up children.
It was a very intimate story….I wished I had such friends, growing up…too late now aint it? ( symbolic logic sounds interesting too!)
familial pressure may be hard to break but what about the burden of friendship?
a great read for any rainy day… tautly written
helps if you are in the mood for some moving read…but I assure you its written so well..you wouldnt know it is sentimental till you finish reading!

I read so many books that I could help somebody build a ” best book” list, satisfying any criteria.
recently read classics:
a house for mr.biswas
one flew over the cuckoo’s nest
one hundred years of solitude
hmmmm..i might need a page for each of these books..but since this is about giving a teaser of the books and making somebody ( No, I havent lost hope yet!) inspired enough to read them…..I shall restrict myself to about a paragraph for each book.
The house for Mr.Biswas is splendid.. I dont know why I could relate to the book so much- because I am indian? my relatives are like the characters?
Each character has been etched, biswas as this frustrated householder who aims to be above his wife’s petty family, wife shama juggling her stubborn husband and her “be close and strangle you” family, the actual family with their squabbling and infighting, the children caught in all this web and trying to not lose without knowing why they are in the war….. ya..often you fight without knowing why you are in the war…because you need to survive!
beautiful
one flew over the cuckoo’s nest is a best-seller, been made into a movie too…
It was a reminder to me that this world ( as it is designed) is always an asylum… people expect you to conform to existing rules, “behave”, maintain strict hierarchial functioning and basically want to you to cower and die.
You CAN choose to be the other extreme ( as does the hero) but there is a price to pay.
The book came out a long time ago, but is as relevant today as then. Goes to show the world is the same.
Can you even think of changing the way you work in your office? break all the unspoken, unwritten barriers?
one 100 years of solitude- I actually wrote in another post…check under “lit” section!

there is this moment that you read something in the newspaper etc. and you feel ” ha! I knew that all along” .
this is one such thing.
wonder how the “spouses in the same career” feel?
mostly, unconsciously, they would have already split their work along different areas…
I am talking about the so-called successful marriages, of course!
the other section- please read this article!
even if you are not married, read it to understand how to handle people…some things are valuable simply because you donot live in an igloo in iceland!
